Introduction
The programme is rooted in development economics and human development disciplines. It provides students with knowledge on a wide range of economic, social and cultural dimensions of development processes throughout the world. The multi-disciplinary nature of the programme exposes learners to the complex nature of sustainable human development. Field training provides learners with a practical experience on development policies and practices. The strong collaboration between Kenyatta University and University of Pavia in partnership with local NGOs and International Development Organizations gives the programme a complete and cross-disciplinary training of effective professionals much needed to drive sustainable development programmes in developing societies..
Programme Objectives
By the end of the programme, learners are expected to:
- Demonstrate comprehension of and analyse key theories and principles in cooperation and human development
- Identify, explain, critique and apply the tools used in cooperation and human development
- Apply human development tools in decision making
- Design and integrate cooperation and human development programmes targeted towards creating suitable economic policies.
- Formulate, implement and evaluate cooperation and human development programmes and strategies to enhance Economic development.
- Conduct research on cooperation and human development issues to enhance decision making and influence policy.
Justification / Rationale
The programme will facilitate learners to acquire advanced knowledge, skills and tools that will facilitate them to undertake measurement and analysis of economic and human development phenomena and to undertake research and analysis in economics. These are useful in designing and implementation of development initiatives to improve on the welfare of the people. The programme blends economic theory with practice providing learners with valuable experience to design and implement development intiatives in various economies.
Entry Requirements
Admission into the Master of economics is guided by the general Kenyatta University regulations governing entry into postgraduate programmes. The minimum requirements for specific programmes are:
- At least an Upper Second-Class Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Economics and Statistics, Economics and Finance or a relevant social science from Kenyatta University or any other recognized Institution
OR
- A holder of a Lower Second-Class degree in the stated disciplines with an average of at least grade ‘C’ in relevant subjects at advanced level or with 2 years’ relevant work experience
OR
Holders of any other undergraduate degree programme without economic and statistics background after successful completion of the Bridging Course for the Master of Economics (Cooperation and Human Development) at the School.
Mode and Structure of Delivery
The mode of delivery for the Master of Economics (Cooperation and Human Development) programme will be blended learning which involves both face-to-face interactions (physical Lectures) and online teaching through K.U online teaching platforms. This will include online discussion forums, chats, online quizzes and assignments. The programme will be offered on Full time and part-time basis.
