The PhD degree programme aims at equipping learners with knowledge in economics at the most advanced frontier, providing them with advanced and specialized skills and techniques to solve critical economic problems, and promote extension and definition of existing knowledge in economics through rigorous objective and data-based research. In so doing, it augments and upgrades Kenya’s higher education human resources by developing university lecturers with the requisite competency in lecturing, research and offering solution to existing economic problems. Although individual students may or will opt to do or pursue other interests, this program is focused to contribute to the overall national human resource development and requirements especially in training university lecturers who carry out research that increases generation of new knowledge that Kenya and the region need in order to be and stay competitive in the global economy.
Kenyan universities have been disadvantaged due to lack of qualified men and women to design and implement 21st century curricula in and within the various academic and career areas useful and necessary for the future of this country and the region. Kenyatta University wishes to create a roadmap for future doctoral degree education programmes in the area of Economics especially among universities in Kenya and bridge the human resource needs of high research scholars in the field of economics.
With that focus, the program hopes to attract and be the academic home for those individuals who have the necessary personal drive, academic preparation, self-discipline and intellectual curiosity to meet and satisfy the challenges of a demanding academic program.
Programme Objectives
The goal of the programme is to facilitate learners to acquire advanced knowledge, skills and tools that would facilitate them to undertake measurement and analysis of economic phenomena in economics. It is also meant to enable the students to acquire advanced knowledge and skills on quantitative techniques and tools for econometric analysis and decision making in the preferred field of economics; and to undertake research and analysis in the relevant field.
Justification / Rationale
The study of economics and statistics is important in data analysis, investment decision making, forecasting, risks and uncertainty assessment of the markets. The information gathered by these activities is crucial for the management of the economy. Graduates from this programme will be able to work in various fields including data analysis, economic planning, investment, trade, economic forecasting and decision making in both the public and private sector. The programme is therefore necessary to empower the learners with knowledge and skills for data analysis, investment decision making, forecasting, risks and uncertainty assessment of the markets. The Programme will be offered in English and therefore targets both local and international students who can read and write in English.
. Entry Requirements
- At least a Masters Degree in Economics from Kenyatta University or from another institution of comparable status. The Masters degree must be based on coursework, examination and research project or coursework, examination and thesis.
- Further, the Masters coursework must include: Microeconomic Theory, Macroeconomic Theory and Quantitative Methods.
Mode and Structure of Delivery
The mode of delivery will be based on blended learning which involves both face-to face interactions (physical Lectures), online teaching through K.U online teaching platforms, and research seminars. The online teaching will include online discussion forums, chats, online quizzes and assignments. In addition, practical computer laboratory sessions, attendance of research workshops and seminars will be incorporated.
