This programme offers research-based reflections and problem-solving in supporting, evaluating and making decisions on recreation and sports participation behaviours in society.
RATIONALE
Sports and recreation form a substantial component of leisure time that makes positive contributions to a person’s total wellbeing. This opportunity gives the recreation industry the capacity to spur economic development in Kenya, and internationally, depending on the creation of a highly skilled workforce who understand the challenges and opportunities of the increasingly global nature of the recreation and sports industry, which is very dynamic.
Today, there is an increased need for quality recreation and sports programs and qualified staff who are also involved in research to inform policy in order to promote the value of play, leisure, sports and recreation for individuals, society, and the environment. In order to serve effectively in these areas, the individual requires specialised training in areas such as report reviews and analysis, writing of reports and policy briefs, seminar and workshop presentations, in-depth research methodology, critical data analysis, in-depth understanding of theories of inclusive participation in recreation and sports; among others. The program, PhD in Recreation and Sports Management, will prepare students for teaching and research careers in recreation and sport management. They will be trained for post-doctoral appointments and positions in universities, industry, and research institutions
OBJECTIVES
i) identify philosophical foundations and schools of thought and assess relevance of applying the subject matter to the recreation and sports industry.
ii) exhibit and promote active and healthy lifestyle, value of fitness and experience and life-long activity
iii) be involved in continued research work in, about and through sport and recreation activities, and provide recommendations for individuals and communities.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A Master Degree in Recreation and Sports Management, Physical Education, Exercise Science, as well as those in related fields such as Health Management and Sports from a Recognized University.
